The woman — who has only been referred to as "Chelsey" by organizers of a GoFundMe campaign set up to help offset medical costs — recently moved to the city for a new job when she was struck by the driver earlier this week.
Around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, police say she was walking through her neighborhood in the 100 block of South Chester Street in Butchers Hill when she was run over by an Amazon delivery van.
The driver fled the scene after briefly getting out, leaving Chelsey with devastating, life-altering injuries.
Baltimore Police identified the driver as 26-year-old Jerome Allan Young Jr., of Baltimore County, who later turned himself in and was charged with negligent and reckless driving.
While Young left the scene, Chelsey wasn’t left alone for long.
A neighborhood Ring camera captured the incident, while neighbors, friends, and Good Samaritans rushed to her side.
“We have been comforted that so many individuals immediately came forward to help,” Rene Cardona, the organizer of the GoFundMe campaign for Chelsey, wrote. “Chelsey’s new city has rallied to show the good we can do together.”
The GoFundMe has raised over $6,100 of its $50,000 goal as of Friday, Feb. 21, with the money going to help Chelsey cover extensive medical bills and living expenses as she recovers.
“Chelsey is facing a very long and arduous road to recovery," Cardona added. "It is expected she will endure many treatments in the months to come and will incur tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills, all the while being unable to work.
“This GoFundMe has been established to support her in moving forward from this tragic event."
